Presenting

Attendees at BarCamps are expected to participate in some way - through giving a presentation (around 20 minutes - although if we have enough time you can take a double slot), a shorter 'lightning talk' (around 5 minutes) or by volunteering or assisting on the day. Unlike a conference, your presentation doesn't have to be 'chosen' or 'accepted'. Participants will choose to attend the presentations of most interest to them.

This is a great way to;

gain experience in presenting and public speaking in a friendly, supportive environment
hone your skills in developing and delivering presentations - great if you're a student aspiring to attend more formal conferences
share your knowledge with others

Presentation topics at previous BarCamps have varied widely and include;

Programming methodologies and techniques including revision control with Github, using MVC to separate presentation and logic, and project communication
Hardware and hardware hacking with Arduino and associated technologies
Using tools such as WordPress, Drupal, etc to build websites
Programming language such as Ruby on Rails, PHP, Perl and Scala

Great presentations share a number of characteristics.

They offer something to the audience - knowledge, humour, skills or useful 'take-aways'
They are engaging and often use humour
Good presenters generally know their topic intimately and can handle audience questions with finesse

Audio visual equipment on the day

We have two lecture theatres for the day - and they have projectors, and built in computers running Windows 7. If you prefer you can also use your laptop to present, however you may need a VGA adapter, particularly if you have a Macintosh computer.

USB access is available for the computers in the lecture theatres so you can bring a presentation on USB stick if you prefer.
